Æthelwulf

The Thegn of Defenascir, he is reputed to be of the Wuffingas line. Many years ago his Grandfather, Wulfgar, left the kingdom of the East Angles to seek his place in the world. He journeyed west and pledged his fealty to Wessex. The family prospered on the borderlands , leading the fight against the Welsh in Cornwall.

The line continued to utilise their ancestral wolf names, but as the boar was used as a standard they took the title Eoforlic (boar-helm), as they and their bondsman placed bronze images on their helms.

In these troubled times Æthelwulf has raised the Fyrd with the aid of Guthrum ‘the mercenary’ and the settled Viking families of the west, for the common good.

Eahlnar

Ealhnar is of ancient Longobard stock. Having followed the trade routes north through Germania to seek youthful fortune and freedom, Ealhnar landed on the Wessex shores full of wide-eyed wonderment at the ways of the Saxons. On coming across Æthelwulf at Cridianton (Crediton), Ealhnar decided to seek the great man's protection and patronage and settle on Aethelwulf's land looking after his peat bog. The work involves cutting and pulling back innumerable layers of peat. The work is physically hard, frustrating and dull and Ealhnar's fingers now resemble prunes. Ealhnar has often been called to arms in 'Wulf''s service. Ealhnar has developed a taste for battle and dreams of leaving the peat bog behind someday.

Eirik Ruriksson

The younger brother of Trader Ruriksson. As a child, Eirik was often left with the family of the Thegn of Defnascir while Ruriksson was away on trading voyages. Under the protection of Æthelwulf, Eirik eventually became a warrior with the Hildsvin.

Karl Ruriksson

A trader who has sailed the seas in search of wealth. Ruriksson has travelled from as far north as Greenland and east to Miklagård and Särkland. He trades iron from Gårdarike and sells to the Blacksmiths who make swords for which the Vikings are famed throughout the world. He also trades in fine wool, wine, spices and slaves, silver, furs, beeswax, honey, glass, silk and walrus ivory; in fact anything that can turn a profit.

Ruriksson was reputed to have funded raids along British shores in the past and rumoured to have launched an expedition to unknown lands far across the sea. He is wealthy though not vastly rich despite his trading history, spending his wealth on his wife, Eir, almost as quickly as he gains it. He claims to follow the 'White Christ' yet still worships the old gods.

Wulfdan

Wulfdan Bjarnisson. Thegn of Athelney, Somersaete. Son of Bjarni Halftroll, father to Halfdan Wulfdanson.

After saving each others lives in battle, Wulfdan and Æthelwulf became sworn sword brothers, with each Thegn leading their troops in support of the other.

Helga

Originally from Norway, Helga was encouraged to leave the country by her father (a master craftsman shipbuilder and carver), who was worried about the rising unrest. He gave her a ship, money and slaves in order to make a new life.

She and her husband joined a group heading for the Faroe Isles, but the party ended up settling in Iceland. Her husband died en route, Helga spent a few years in Iceland before deciding to join her relatives in England near Athelney. It was here that she met Wulfdan.

On One such visit to Dyflin Hildolf met Ulf Olafsson the Captain of the Guard. Hildolf joined the Guard to fight the Irish and setteled in Dyflin where he later meet a woman called Gyda who became his wife.
Hildolf and Gyda managed to escape Ireland with Ulf and sailed to Dumonia after a great battle was lost by the Norse and Dyflin was no longer a safe place to be.

Gyda

Gyda was born in Norway the Daughter of a Trader. After Gyda's mother died when Gyda was still very young her father decided to move his household to Dublin (Dyflin) where trade was booming in slavery and all other maner of goods.
Gyda grew up in Dyflin and eventually married Hildolf Thjordmarsson, a member of the guard. They lived in Dyflin together until the loss of a great battle against the Irish made Dyflin an unsafe place to be.

Osric

When the Vikings arrived, Osric's Grandfather swore allegiance to a Viking Lord whom he followed through North Africa and Eastern Europe where they fought as mercenaries for the Byzantines. Upon his return to England he settled in Exanceaster where he took a local Saxon girl as his wife. Osric's father, Æthelfrith keeps a tavern in the city and his mother, Hilda is a market trader; her mother was a servant, one of her uncles was a skald and another fought for Wessex.

Ragnar

He was born in Stoke, between Danelaw and old Mercia of a local Saxon mother and a Viking father from the great army who settled in the area. Ragnar's family were forced south to the safety of Wessex when he was three years old as a result of tensions between the local Eorls. The family settled in Kirton and at the age of fourteen Ragnar began his military training under the watchful eyes of Guthrum. Eventually, he became Guthrum's bodyguard on his travels with a fellow mercenary from Kernow (Cornwall) to the Isle of the Manx's and then into the heart of Wales. Ragnar was fostered by Kari of Lundenwic (London) after a bloody battle on Peel beach by showing distinction in battle. He also spent some time in Orkneyjar (Orkney) during a trading trip for weapons and gold. Now serving under Æthelwulf and fighting on good pay with the local Fyrd, he is frequently known to take good weapons and equipment from those he slays in battle and keep them for himself.

Torstein

Being the second son Torstein knew he would not inherit the family land so he left home to join his mother’s brother in Coppergate in Jorvik. However he very soon realised that cup making was not his chosen lifetime career!

So with his uncle’s blessing Torstein left Jorvik to travel the land of the Saxons, he settled in a village where the river Clyst was broad. It was here that his aptitude and willingness to work hard brought him to the attention of the local lord, Æthelwulf, who needed some "tasks" done. Æthelwulf was impressed with his service and loyalty so much so that he fostered him and Torstein became part of his household. Torstein has sworn allegiance and pledged to protect his foster family with his life.
